Willimantic Downtown

Largely developed around Willimantic’s booming textile industry in the early 20th century, Willimantic’s downtown is a place where arts, theatre, business and education work together to maintain a regional center of culture, entertainment, recreation with eye popping events, museums, one-of-a-kind shops and charming restaurants in a river valley crammed with opportunities for biking, hiking and water sports.

Willimantic’s distinctive neighborhoods abutting the downtown include Mill District home to the dominate granite mill complex, the heart of Willimantic’s past as a center for the textile industry. Prospect Hill, adjacent to Eastern Connecticut State University boasts one of the state’s largest districts of lovingly restored Victorian Homes. Throughout Willimantic you will also notice neighborhoods and shops emerging as centers of our proud Hispanic population creating a diverse culture in our town reminiscent of our population’s ethnic history.

A dominant theme that appears in Willimantic’s art, shop displays and store windows and the welcoming Thread City Crossing bridge is frogs. The amphibians decorating The Frog Bridge are fully 11-feet tall, and they sit atop an equally defining symbol – spools of thread. Both rooted in the town’s history.
